English abstract

The school is an arena where students are supposed to get support in handling issues related to health and the body. In physical education (PE) learning about and with the body is central. Emotions, experiences and meanings related to the body seem to be crucial in the subject. Hence, a relevant question is what PE teachers learn in their education in order to develop competences to teach towards those aims. In this article, we draw on two theoretical perspectives of the body: the body as object and the body as subject. In a theoretically driven text analysis of the national curricula in PE as well as the Bachelor in Physical Education and Sport program (BAPE), we show how these perspectives appears. The analysis show that both PE and BAPE open up for a broad understanding of the body, especially in the formulation of the purposes and in the introductory texts. However, in the learning outcomes it is less clear that the body can be understood from different theoretical perspectives. With this backdrop we discuss how different perspectives on the body can establish an opportunity for developing PE as an inclusive subject which manages to meet and support learning and development, in a constructive way, for all students.
