English abstract

The article explores the origin and historical development of critical pedagogy and its relevance for arts education today. Starting out with a description of today’s neo-liberal educational landscape, where an increasing focus on standardization, testing and cost-efficiency is getting in the way of educating critically conscious and responsible citizens, embedding arts education in the ideas of critical pedagogy is discussed as a way to challenge the dominance of neo-liberalism in education. Two lines of development are accentuated – the first one starting with Paulo Freire’s work in Brazil and continuing in North America. Here the situation of marginalized groups in society and the idea of their empowerment is the focus. The other line follows the European tradition, especially in Germany, and can be described as more philosophically oriented, but with significant influence on pedagogical ideas and concepts on the continent and in Scandinavia.

Building on this historical overview, the article discusses the question whether a reorientation towards critical arts education, here exemplified by music education, can help address societal and educational challenges in the 21st century.
ER -
